A report recently released by the United States Government Accountability Office suggest the government takes to long to develop and implement new safety rules.

The report focused on the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, finding it took nearly eight years on average for OSHA to approve regulations to protect workers from on-the-job hazards like dangerous chemicals.

Advocates of workplace safety have told multiple Senate committees that the agency has become too cautious in the development of new rules.

According to the Associate Press OSHA stated the reason for a lack of speed in implementing new standards is greater procedural requirements, shifting priorities and a higher standard of judicial review than most federal agencies face.
