I was watching the news yesterday evening and saw the massive explosion that happened at the new San Diego Hilton Hotel. It happened around 2pm. Luckily it was still under construction, it could have been much worse if those nearly 1200 rooms were full. No one was killed, but 9 construction workers were injured, 3 of them seriously.
From the initial assessment of the situation it appears to be a natural gas explosion. Apparently there was leak and when the boiler automatically kicked on, it ignited the gas blowing the North face of the hotel out, from the fourth through seventh floors.
It was more than the blast that frightened the people in the area. The events of 9/11 came to everyone’s minds. An explosion that big and with our countries recent history, terrorism is the first thing that came to mind.
Anytime people are injured it’s a tragedy, but thankfully this incident was an accident.
Investigators say it could take 6 months to fully understand what happened. Local, state and federal authorities will be combing the scene for quite sometime.
I have written many articles on safety, I know through personal experience, and hours of research what natural gas can do. Always be sure to check and double check your work when you hook up natural gas lines, even in the home on the family stove. Make sure the gas is turned off when its not in use. I have seen homes completely leveled because a burner was left on.
For those injured in yesterday’s explosion, our thoughts and prayers are with you for a speedy recovery. If you would like to leave comments please do so below.
