After the recent inauguration of President Barack Obama, executives from the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) met with representatives of the administration. The meeting focused on key concerns about the future of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).
Among the concerns raised by ASSE to the White House officials was the selection of individuals for leadership positions who can forge relationships “across the spectrum of safety and health stakeholders”.
The ASSE representatives also advocated actions for OSHA, including the following:
- Come up with cooperative ways to overcome limitations on OSHA’s ability to update standards and permissible exposure limits.
- Advance risk-based safety and health management approaches like those used in Europe, Japan and other countries.
- “Keep an open mind” with regard to ergonomics regulation.
- Continue to support cooperative programs like VPP (Voluntary Protection Programs).
- Focus on transportation-related fatalities.
- Allow third-party safety audits that expand OSHA’s reach.
