New OSHA eTool: Shipfitting in the Maritime Industry

» by in: OSHA

Whoever said shipfitting tasks are easy either knows nothing about the maritime industry or refers to creating mini vessels with Lego blocks. Like other workplaces, shipyards are the site of different accidents caused by shipfitting in vessel construction and repair.

Thankfully, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) launched its new resource especially for the maritime industry. Called Safety and Health Injury Prevention Sheet (SHIPS) on Shipfitting, this new downloadable document discusses in detail the different hazards of shipfitting.

This SHIPS is the second in a series of resources created by OSHA for the maritime industry. The first one is Hot Work-Welding, Cutting and Brazing.

Employers will find this document ideal in their training presentations since it discusses workplace hazards in an interesting way. Not only does the document present actual shipyard incidents, it also provides successful solutions and measures on how to prevent each problem.
